Why Are Shampoo Bars Better For The Environment And For Your Hair?

6 reasons to switch to eco-friendly shampoo bars

Beauty products can be harmful to the environment due to their plastic packaging or questionable ingredients. Most of us are trying to reduce the amount of plastic in our bathroom and some zero-waste cosmetics are easier to switch to than others.

1- Solid shampoos are made to last and more economical

Shampoo bars last for weeks. As with soap bars, you only use what you need and there is no risk of wasting the product under the shower. You can wash your hair up to 35-40 times with a shampoo bar (55g). To keep your shampoo even longer, it's highly recommended to store the bar on a soap dish and away from water. See some additional tips here

2- Sustainable & low waste

My shampoos are made with organic and/or natural ingredients which are vegan and cruelty-free.

Bye-Bye plastic, my packaging is fully recyclable. The shampoos are wrapped by hand with FSC & chlorine-free paper and then put in a small cardboard box. I use cardboard boxes made in Britain with materials sourced from the UK and EU.

The boxes can be recycled and made from 95% (minimum) recycled paper. I use recycled, 100% post-consumer waste and FSC paper to print labels. Labels are also cut and applied by hand with solvent-free glue. Additionally, you can reuse the small box to store tiny things like jewellery or to wrap a small gift in.

3- Shampoo bars are travel-friendly and hassle-free

When you fly with solid cosmetics, you quickly realise they are travel-friendly and hassle-free: no need to put the solid shampoo in the liquid bag, to check if it's below 100ml or to put it out of your bag at the airport security.

Also, there is no risk of spills or leaky bottles anymore! Liquid body washes and liquid shampoos can create nasty surprises. Shampoo bars are smaller than the liquid ones, meaning more space in your luggage! You can also store your shampoo bars, soaps and lotions bars in a cork box.

4 - Made with natural and sulfate-free ingredients

The shampoo bars are handmade with a gentle surfactant, organic apple cider vinegar, mineral or plant-based powders, organic carrier oils and organic essential oils*.

There is NO mono propylene glycol (MPG), NO Polyethylene Glycol (PEG), NO preservatives, NO Palm oil. My shampoos are also free from SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulphate) and SLES (Sodium Laureth Sulfate).

5 - Shampoo bars are easy to use, even on long hair

Some customers can be nervous about using shampoo bars for the first time but are nicely surprised to see the product create a nice foam.

Check out Dajana's feedback:

"I was sceptical at first to try the shampoo bars. Because I have very long hair and thought it would take a long time to rub it in. But Justine's shampoos they lather and foam very quickly I was so surprised. It left my scalp clean and refreshed too. Would definitely recommend."

Shampoo bars are very easy to use: Rub the bar between your hands like you would with a bar of soap. You can also gently rub the shampoo directly on wet hair to get more foam. Then apply on wet hair, massage (especially the scalp) and rinse well.

Thanks to the surfactant, you might even need less conditioner than usual! I have long hair and don't need to use a conditioner. I will occasionally rinse my hair once in a while with an apple cider vinegar and water mix, that's it!

6 - Handmade in small batches with care and passion

The shampoo bars are made by myself in small batches in Dublin, Ireland. As is the packaging and its design. Purchasing my products not only allows you to treat yourself but it also supports a local, small business that takes sustainability seriously (from raw materials to final use of products), as well as the environmental challenges humanity and the earth face right now. I sincerely thank you for your support!
